Intra Muros Festival

A festival that awakens the senses, set on a remarkable historic site

Commissioned by the Flemish Government – Landcommanderij Alden Biesen – a new music festival was developed in 2020, set within the walls of the 800-year-old Landcommanderij in Bilzen (Belgium).

The full name of the annual international festival is:
Intra Muros Festival For Early Music – Alden Biesen Castle.
The festival is built on three core pillars: young talent, internationally renowned performers, and exclusive programming.

Each year, one or more young Flemish musicians are given carte blanche: artists on the verge of an international breakthrough who, as musicians in residence, are offered the opportunity to present themselves in various settings throughout the festival weekend – as soloists, in chamber music formations, and in collaboration with guest ensembles or orchestras.

The 2022 edition featured established international names from Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Vienna, and the Czech Republic – each presenting exclusive programmes curated especially for the Intra Muros Festival.

Early music at Intra Muros spans a period from the Middle Ages to the 18th century – from Hildegard von Bingen to the French Revolution. No niches, no music behind glass – just a full weekend immersed in the living presence of music, surrounded by the walls of a unique and inspiring historical site.

As a visitor, you find yourself among the musicians, instrumentalists, singers and concerts. The impressions of this exceptional setting – the art, the many human connections, the culinary delights, and the walks in nature – all come together in a shared sense of encounter and emotion.

In short: IMF is a unique experience, both for audiences and for performers.
